Some dental procedures are more intimidating than others, and root canals would certainly fall into that category. At Prairie Star Dental, we understand that the idea of needing a root canal can be unnerving for some people, which is why Dr. Rawcliffe wants our patients to know that they don’t have to be afraid of root canals. Thanks to advancements made in dental technology over the past several years, root canals are routine procedures that produce very little if any discomfort on the part of the patient. In fact, root canals are often an extremely gentle and effective way to alleviate the pain that usually occurs when a root canal is needed. We want to assure our Round Rock, TX, patients that there’s no reason to be nervous about needing a root canal.
The Root Canal Procedure
Dr. Rawcliffe may recommend a root canal for a patient with tooth decay that has spread to the pulp of the tooth. In a root canal procedure, Dr. Rawcliffe removes both the pulp and the nerves of the affected tooth, then seals off the tooth to protect it. Often, a crown is placed on top of the tooth for an added measure of protection. A tooth doesn’t need either nerves or pulp to function normally, so teeth that have undergone a root canal procedure can perform the same as other healthy teeth.
Signs That You May Need a Root Canal
While it’s true that some patients who need a root canal may have no symptoms at all, most people do. What follows is a list of symptoms that may indicate you need a root canal:
- A severe toothache that increases with pressure
- Unusual sensitivity to hot and cold food and drinks
- Swelling and/or tenderness of the gum tissue around a certain tooth
- Discoloration/darkening of a tooth
- A sore on the gum near the affected tooth
